TRWD Drought Plan Actions

The following is a summary of the actions within Tarrant Regional Water District’s Drought Contingency Plan.

Stage 1: Water Watch - Reduce Water Use by 5%

Most commonly activated when total water supply reaches 75% capacity.

All Water Users

Maximum two days per week watering with automatic sprinkler systems and hose-end sprinklers based on odd/even addresses and day of week schedule. 

No watering with sprinklers between the hours of 10 am and 6 pm.

Exceptions to the days of the week and time of day schedules include:

  • Watering with handheld hose, soaker hose and/or drip irrigation may occur any day, any time and for any reason
  • Variances may be available through your water provider or city for the following:
    • Establishing new turfgrass and/or landscaping for a maximum of 30 days. Water users are encouraged to not re-sod or plant during the hottest months of the year.
    • Does not apply to installation or over-seeding of cool season grasses.
    • If a very large property cannot be completed watered within the two days per week schedule, provided no zones will be watered more than two days per week.
  • Golf courses may water greens and tee boxes as necessary outside of 10 am and 6 pm and encouraged to reduce water use by 5%.
  • Athletic fields for organized sports practice and competitions may be watered as necessary to protect the health and safety of participants and encouraged to reduce water use by 5%.
  • Restrictions do not apply to well water, reclaimed water or other alternative water sources.

 

Do not allow water waste from:

  • Failure to repair leaks, broken sprinkler heads, etc.
  • Spraying the street, parking area or sidewalk
  • Allowing water to run off property for a distance of 50 feet or greater
  • Running sprinklers during any form of precipitation or freezing conditions

Stage 2: Water Warning - Reduce Water Use by 10%

Most commonly activated when total water supply reaches 60% capacity.

All measures in Stage 1 apply except for the following additions:

All Water Users

Maximum one day per week watering with automatic sprinkler systems and hose-end sprinklers.

If implemented, a coordinated once per week watering schedule will be communicated to the public by TRWD and/or their water provider.

Stage 3: Water Emergency - Reduce Water Use by 20%

Activated when total water supply reaches 45% capacity or other water system emergency condition.

All measures in Stage 1 apply except for the following additions:

All Water Users

Prohibit all outdoor watering with automatic sprinkler systems and hose-end sprinklers, including parks, golf courses and sports fields.

  • Irrigation of new landscapes and/or turfgrass installations is prohibited.
  • Golf course greens and tee boxes may only be watered by hand as necessary.
  • Variances may be available for athletic fields used for organized sports practice and competitions to protect the health and safety of participants.

 

Washing of paved areas or hosing of buildings is prohibited unless performed by a professional pressure/power washing service using high efficiency equipment and a vacuum recovery system where possible.

All vehicle washing is restricted to commercial car washes, commercial service stations or professional washing services only.

Permitting of private swimming pools is prohibited.

Operation of ornamental fountains or ponds that use potable water is prohibited except if necessary to support aquatic life or water quality.
